La Paz
La Paz is considered as the synthesis of Bolivia because it has all the different kinds of micro-climates, regions, and natural attractions of the country: high snow-covered mountains, Andean landscapes, deserts, and sub-tropical jungles.
Geography
The department of La Paz is located on the western side of the country. It is 3.627 m. above sea level. It has an area of 133.985 Km2, and it borders in the North with Pando, in the South with Oruro, in the East with Beni and Cochabamba, and in the West with the Republics of Peru and Chile.
The city of La Paz is the highest capital in the world. It emerges in a canyon at the foot of the snow-covered mountain, Illimani, which is considered the protector of the city. “Nuestra Señora de La Paz” (Our Lady of La Paz) is the name with which the city was founded. A fascinating night view of the city can be seen from any high spot. It is a city of contrasts that blends the traditional with the modern.
Climate
The climate of La Paz varies according to the altitude; it is cold in the tableland (Altiplano); it is freezing cold over 5.000 m. above sea level, and it is temperate and hot at less than 3.000 m. above sea level.
Population
The department of La Paz has 2.406.337 inhabitants with a population density of 18.47 inhabitants per Km2.
The city of La Paz has a population of 1.004.437 inhabitants.
